The Duties of a Language Teacher

Teaching language is one of the most rewarding and challenging positions one might ever encounter throughout a career.  Language is so essential to communicate not only in business, but also to function in everyday life.  We often take for granted the language that we speak and understand on a daily basis without truly comprehending the great obstacle it would be to live without it. Just imagine traveling to a foreign land with a completely different language where very few people can understand what you are saying.  How would you feel? What would you do?  Essentially these are the types of feelings often described by language learners when exposed to a new language for the first time. Therefore when one accepts the opportunity to become a language teacher, we become mentors and leaders that bring forth clarity and fluency of another language.

One of the best examples experienced as a language teacher came from working with a basic beginner Spanish speaker learning English.  The student spoke little to no English and could barely understand the directions given to them.  As a language teacher one adapts to see the learning experience from the student’s perspective and also to think outside the box.  In order to better convey directions, words, and even simple sentences to the student, a visual approach that incorporated lots of games was introduced. This approached proved to be very effective with not only delivering the target points to the student, but also getting the learner out of their shell and into a more comfortable state.  Visuals are definitely the key to learn a new language as is the encouragement of the instructor.  It was absolutely rewarding to have the student start the lesson with little to no English and leave the lesson with five new sentences to say.

Although the example above referenced a basic beginner student it is important to explain that being creative and using visuals works for all levels of language students.  It really all comes down to encouragement from the language teacher and creating a fun, effective and productive environment.  As language teachers we must remember that many times we are the authority on language for our students therefore it is imperative that we make learning the language a positive and effective experience.  We must also understand that results from our methods will not always be so apparent and grand.  Many times our students will progress at a slower pace than we would like however even little progress is a great accomplishment in itself.  This is another instance where we as language teachers must put ourselves in the student’s shoes.

Let us all be creative and innovative and provide the best and most memorable experiences for our language learners.  It is also encouraged to periodically become a language learner yourself so that one never forgets the experiences with learning a new language.  This way we can readily relate to our students’ feelings and the process they go through to attain a new language.  Let’s keep up the quality of our teaching and move forward towards a new set of language learners.
